CranioSacral Therapy at NeuroTherapeutics
What is the CranioSacral System?
The skull is often thought of as one solid bone that houses and protects the
brain. In reality, it is more like a puzzle. An intricate system of individual
bones that fit neatly together. Inside the skull and down the spinal column is
a fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. This fluid is
enclosed in a continuous membrane and pulses at its own rhythm of six to twelve
cycles per minute, much like the heart or respiratory rate.
When this rhythm is restricted or disrupted, symptoms may appear. Some of these
symptoms include head, neck and back pain, jaw pain, hearing loss, ringing ears,
ear infections, visual disturbances, tooth pain, and sinus problems.
What is CranioSacral Therapy?
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a painless, gentle application of pressure aimed at
releasing restriction or disruptions in the CranioSacral System. It is difficult
for the body to release restrictions itself, so the body often adopts an abnormal
movement pattern to 'get around' the restriction. This can lead to many uncomfortable
conditions.
Our therapists are trained using Upledger CranioSacral techniques. Treatment usually
begins with 2-4 sessions to assess response to the CranioSacral technique. Whether or
not CranioSacral Therapy will be effective can usually be determined within this first
series of visits.
Could my child benefit from CranioSacral Therapy?
Many infants, especially those who have experienced a difficult birth, can benefit from
CST. Often children labeled 'difficult' or 'poor sleepers' can benefit greatly. Children
with frequent colds, ear infections, headaches, neck and back pain, or irritability also
respond well to CST. CST is a non-invasive form of treatment that is very gentle and
generally tolerated well by children. CST can be used as a first response to many common
childhood problems, often avoiding more invasive therapies.
CST combined with Myofascial Release is very effective for many children with tight muscles
such as in Cerebral Palsy. We have found that occasional intense CST treatments can greatly
speed progress in children receiving ongoing physical therapy. CST has also been found to
be very effective for children with disorders such as ADD, ADHD, and Autism. Infants and
children generally respond favorably with less CST visits than adults.
